Kitchen Reno Done Right: Darren's Gas Fitting Job in Hervey Bay

Flushed Away Plumbing • May 31, 2026

When Darren bought his post-war Queenslander in Scarness, he had a vision for the kitchen. Out with the old gas bayonet setup that was barely suitable for a single freestanding cooker, and in with a proper island bench fitted with a gas cooktop, a wall oven, and a range hood. It was a significant renovation, and he was curious whether a local gas plumber in Hervey Bay could handle the gas line extension and appliance connections as part of a broader build.

Darren had worked with large tradies in the past who were technically competent but hard to communicate with. He wanted someone who would show up when they said they would, coordinate with his builder, and explain what they were doing as they went. He found Flushed Away Plumbing through a neighbour's recommendation and gave us a call.

The Problem

Older Queenslander homes often have original gas infrastructure that wasn't designed with modern appliance loads in mind. Darren's existing gas line was a single small-bore run terminating at one bayonet in the kitchen. To support a 90cm gas cooktop, a gas-boosted oven, and maintain adequate pressure, the line needed to be extended, upsized in a section, and properly pressure tested before any new appliances were connected.

There's no shortcut when it comes to gas work in Queensland. All installations must be completed by a licensed gas fitter, and the work must be pressure tested and certified before appliances are commissioned. Our licensed gas plumbing team in Hervey Bay handles everything from the line work through to appliance commissioning and certification. Darren was reassured to know the compliance side was fully covered.

How Flushed Away Plumbing Responded

We met with Darren and his builder on site before work began to review the plans and map out how the gas work would integrate with the kitchen fit-out timeline. Clear communication between trades is what makes a renovation run smoothly, and we've worked on enough projects to know that coordination upfront saves everyone time later.

Our Hervey Bay gas fitting team completed the rough-in work at the right stage of the build so the builder could close the walls without waiting on us. We came back for the final fit-off once the kitchen was in place, connected the appliances, pressure tested the entire system, and issued the compliance certificate. Darren mentioned that working with us felt nothing like his previous renovation experiences.

The Solution and Outcome

The new gas line runs cleanly from the meter, properly sized for the appliance load with all connections made to current standards. The cooktop, oven, and range hood are all performing exactly as Darren expected. The pressure test confirmed zero leakage across the entire system, which is the only acceptable result for gas work.

As part of our visit, we also talked with Darren about his civil plumbing needs for an outdoor entertaining area he's planning next. We also discussed whether his laundry and bathroom drainage would need upgrading as part of the broader renovation scope. Having a trusted local plumber across the whole project made planning considerably easier. Flushed Away Plumbing is the go-to gas plumber in Hervey Bay for renovation work that needs to be done right.

What Darren Would Tell Others

"Fair dinkum, I've had mixed experiences with tradies on renovation jobs. Flushed Away were different. They showed up when they said they would, they communicated clearly with my builder, and the finished work is exactly what I needed. The compliance cert was ready the same day, which made everything straightforward."
