After the Rain: How Janelle Tracked Down a Roof Leak in Hervey Bay

Flushed Away Plumbing • May 31, 2026

Janelle had lived in her older weatherboard home in Maryborough for years without giving much thought to the roof plumbing. That changed after an unusually heavy downpour left a brown watermark spreading across her bedroom ceiling. A neighbour who had recently used Flushed Away Plumbing for their own repairs suggested she give us a call rather than guess at the cause. She was glad she did.

Janelle wasn't sure whether she was dealing with a roofing issue, a plumbing issue, or both. That uncertainty is common with roof leaks, and it's one of the reasons getting the right tradie in matters. Our roof plumbing team in Hervey Bay works with gutters, downpipes, flashings, and stormwater drainage, which covers most of the entry points where water finds its way into a home after rain.

The Problem

When we got up on Janelle's roof, the source of the problem became clear fairly quickly. The box gutter running along the back of the house had a section of failed sealant at a join, and years of leaf debris had accumulated in the valley, causing water to pool and back up under the flashing during heavy rain. The overflow was finding its way through the ceiling cavity and into the bedroom.

Box gutters are common on older Queensland homes and require periodic maintenance to stay watertight. Left unattended, even a small failure at a join can allow significant water ingress over time, and once moisture gets into ceiling cavities it can cause damage well beyond the original leak point. Janelle's situation was caught early enough to avoid major structural damage, which was fortunate. Our stormwater drainage assessment confirmed the downpipes were also underperforming for the volume of rain the property receives.

How Flushed Away Plumbing Responded

We gave Janelle a clear explanation of what we found, showed her photos from the roof, and outlined exactly what needed to be done. No vague language, no estimate that ballooned once work started. The scope was a reseal of the failed gutter join, a full clean of the valley and box gutter, and an upgrade of one undersized downpipe that was contributing to the overflow problem.

Janelle appreciated that we didn't try to turn a straightforward repair into something bigger. Our Hervey Bay plumbing team sees a lot of roof plumbing jobs where a proper clean and reseal is all that's needed. She also appreciated the photos, which meant she could understand exactly what had been done without needing to climb up herself.

The Solution and Outcome

The job was completed in a single visit. The gutter join was resealed with a professional-grade flexible sealant rated for Queensland's weather conditions. The valley was cleared of approximately 12 kilograms of compacted leaf debris, the box gutter was flushed clean, and the new downpipe was installed to handle the correct drainage volume for the roof catchment area.

Janelle has had two significant rain events since the repair with no further water ingress. We also recommended she book a plumbing maintenance check in the next 12 months to review the condition of the older sections of her roof plumbing before the next wet season. Keeping on top of roof drainage is one of the most cost-effective forms of home maintenance for Hervey Bay homeowners. What Janelle Would Tell Others

"My neighbour pointed me in the right direction and I'm grateful she did. Flushed Away found the problem, explained it properly, and fixed it without any fuss. The photos from the roof were really helpful. I now know what to look out for and I'll be getting a maintenance check before next wet season."

Roof plumbing problems rarely announce themselves until the damage is already done. If you've noticed water stains, overflowing gutters, or pooling around your home's foundations after rain, it's worth getting a professional eye on it.
